Airports in the Canaries
The Canary Islands are the tropical paradise of Spain, for Spaniards living in mainland Spain they are synonymous with holidays, as they are also for the hundreds and thousands of foreign tourists who pack the Canary Islands all year round. The Canary Islands are colonized and populated by Spaniards and lie 1,150km off the coast of Africa. Exploring the Canaries you move from sub-tropical vegetation to volcanic semi-deserts, from verdant cliffs and gorges to sand dunes by the sea shore. Each island is serviced by its own airport, Gran Canaria Airport, La Palma Airport, Tenerife South Airport, Tenerife North Airport, Fuerteventura Airport and Lanzarote Airport.
Gran Canaria Airport
Gran Canaria airport is located 18km (11 miles) south of Las Palmas. 1 terminal on three floors (ground floor Arrivals, first floor Departures). Arrivals and Departures are divided into three areas: European Union (A), International (B) and Inter-Island (C) The airport is called Las Palmas and is the gateway to the ultimate holiday island - Gran Canaria, which is famous above all for the tourist resorts of Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas and Puerto Rico, all of which are on the south coast of the island.
La Palma Airport
La Palma airport was built in 1970 with the 1.600m runway 01/19, since 1980 it has the length of today - 2.200m. SPC has no parallel taxiways! The airport replaced an older airport higher up near the mountains, which had only 900m of runway and bad wind conditions. In 2001 the airport dispatched a total of nearly 1.000.000 passengers and more than 14.600 flight operations as well as more than 1.600 tons of cargo.
Tenerife South Airport
Tenerife south airport is a modern international airport. There are two airports on the island of Tenerife, one the south of the island (Tenerife Sur, TFS, also known as "Aeropuerto Reina Sofia"). And one the north side (Tenerife Norte, TFN, also known as "Aeropuerto de Los Rodeos"). Both airports are at about 2.5 hours flying time from Madrid, and about 3 hours from Barcelona. The strong competition between them has substantially lowered the airfares to the Canaries in the past years.
Tenerife North Airport
Puerto de la Cruz lies some 35 km from the Tenerife north airport, Los Rodeos airport (TFN), and 100 km from the Reina Sofia (TFS) airport, with a motorway link covering the full journey in both cases. The easiest access is from the northern Airport (TFN) along the TF-5 motorway. This is an approximately 20 to 30 minute journey along the coast. The South Airport (TFS, or Reina Sofia) is more than an hour away along the TF-1 and then TF-5 motorways.
Fuerteventura Airport
Fuerteventura Airport is close to every part of the island. The size of Fuerteventura makes almost every area quickly and easily accesible to the explorer. The island's capital and main port is Puert del Rosario - whilst inland you can visit Antigua's windmills and the interesting villages of La Olivia, Pajara and Betancuria.
Lanzarote Airport
Lanzarote airport is located 5 kilometers from Arrecife, the capital of the Island, in the municipal of San Bartholomew. Germany and the UK have the majority of flights, with contributions from Holland, Finland and Scandinavia. More local traffic includes Binter Canarias' ATR72s on inter-island services, plus Iberia DC9s and 727s linking with mainland Spain.
